POWER
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) protests were responses to bill proposals being created by the Indian government in late 2019 which encouraged unconstitutional discrimination towards minorities and certain religious sects of the Indian population. Nationwide protests eventually spurred police brutality against the peaceful crowds. The power of the central government was under scrutiny and the country was in uproar.
This photograph series was taken between December 2019 and the summer of 2020. I visited the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest sites in New Delhi and also went to the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace). The central photograph of this series (below) shows the palace looming over the viewer. The building symbolises the power of the state and the country but is juxtaposed with the scenes of protest.
